Jesus in the midst of inspiring a revolution that will completely transform the world makes this proclamation:
“Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist.” When one of the most extraordinary teachers, influential leaders, and divisive figures to ever live speaks so highly of another man, one should wonder who this man is. What made John so significant? What was his mission and why was it such a threat to the established order? Was he starting a revival or a revolution? John, an extreme radical, was a man of integrity unafraid to confront the corrupt political/religious leaders of his day. John was not only a prophet, he was the last of the Old prophets, a bridge between the Old and New Testaments. A man of such significance, his coming was foretold by the prophet Malachi 430 years prior. John is the only prophet to proclaim the coming Messiah and live to see Him in the flesh. In fact, according to Jesus, John was much more. “What did you go out into the wilderness to behold? … To see a Prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a Prophet.” Drawing from sacred scripture, historical documents, and archaeological findings, our graphic novel will illustrate John’s life growing up in first-century Judea as the son of a temple priest. The story starts with John imprisoned by Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee and Perea, for publicly condemning Herod's illicit marriage. While in chains, John is visited by a mysterious admirer determined to find out if John truly is a Prophet of God, hoping to find Adonai’s will for his own life. While John's fate hangs in the balance, he readily answers the visitor’s inquiries. Through this exchange, we learn what it was like to celebrate Passover as a child, to be Jesus’s cousin, to challenge corrupt authority, and to baptize the Messiah. As John is rotting away in prison, he begins to wonder if Jesus truly is the one who's come to set them free. If so, why is Jesus freely roaming around performing a vast array of miracles, while never once attempting to intervene for him? The magnificent art will immerse you in a historical adventure not for the light-hearted, but rather for those not afraid to find meaning even when one is required to face tremendous suffering. Prepare yourself as you are confronted by an emotionally driven, unexpected twist that will have you rethinking everything you just read. This is the story of a truly exceptional life as dramatic as any Shakespearian novel and more tragic than any Greek mythology, for John’s life is more than a prominent myth. John’s brazen life and grim death still play a pivotal role in the enduring reexamination of why we live and how we should die. |
